States Mission to the United Nations At Amnesty International's Annual General Meeting Sofia Jarrin had the attendees squish their hands in finger paint and splat their palm prints on a large sheet. "Give Us a Hand for Peace in Central Africa" was proudly displayed outside of the United States Mission to the United Nations by members of the Get On the Bus III trip. The posters and banners called for the US to take action in Burundi to prevent the Rwandan tragedy from occurring there also.
Many people had flyers asking, "Who killed Jose Lopez Herrera?" Jose Lopez Herrera was a UNHCR (Untied Nations High Commission for Refugees) representative who was most likely the victim of an extrajudicial execution. Sofia Jarrin turned a shaky situation it to a positive move for human rights. The vigil outside of the US Mission to the United Nations was, at first to be accompanied by a meeting with a representative of the US Mission. This meeting was then scrapped at the advice of an Amnesty International staffer, but the day of the event we got the OK to have a meeting. Roth and Jarrin rebounded and with a few quick phone calls from the street, renegotiated the meeting and had their voices heard by an official at the US Mission. Special thanks to the team of Jarrin and Roth for quick action and quick thinking. (page 15 of 19) |
