Nigerian Consulate Demonstration

At the Nigerian consulate protest, emotions ran high. Across the street from the consulate building, group members chanted loudly while a few men from the consulate kept a wary eye on the proceedings. "Ken Saro-Wiwa! We will not forget!" the group members yelled, waving posters bearing the picture of the writer and activist executed by Nigerian authorities in 1995. Group members Carl Williams and Carla Bernardes, who delivered an enlarged postcard signed by the group to a Nigerian consulate officer, were given a packet of Nigerian government materials bearing titles such as "The Ogoni Crisis: The Truth of the Matter." One yellow sheet of paper which demonstrated the effect of AI’s pressure on Nigeria was titled, "Abiola: No Prisoner of Conscience: What Amnesty International is not telling you about M.K.O. Abiola."
