Program Content:

Students participate in the democratic process by learning concrete strategies for combating child labor. We spotlight one such youth effort led by the students at the Broadmeadows Middle School in Quincy, MA. Broadmeadows students have outlined five steps to end child labor including consumer awareness and activism, corporate responsibility and accountability, legislation and its enforcement, education, and ending poverty. We will also look at contributions by other youths.

As part of their curriculum unit on the Industrial Revolution, Ron Adams' students became interested in sweatshop issues and combating the economic, political, social and sexual exploitation of children worldwide. They learned about Iqbal Masih who was sold into slavery as a bonded laborer at the age of four. He escaped when he was 10 years old and, at 12, visited Broadmeadows and spoke to students about forced child labor. A few weeks later, when he returned to Pakistan, he was murdered -- many say because he spoke out against child labor. Join us for what promises to be an empowering series. Students will learn how to build effective public relationships, how to effect positive change, and ways to contribute to a culture of democracy.

A graduate of UMASS Boston, Ron Adams has taught middle and high school for 21 years. He currently teaches at the Broad-meadows Middle School in Quincy. In 1992, he was selected by the Massachusetts Department of Education as Massachusetts State Teacher of the Year in recognition of his efforts to connect students, through the curriculum, to their communities.

Amanda Loos helped launch an e-mail campaign she and classmates designed to teach other middle schools about Iqbal Masih and child labor. Their efforts resulted in the creation of "The Kids Campaign to Build a School for Iqbal." Amanda was also selected by Ms. Magazine as one of its twenty-one young women to watch in the 21st century.

Elizabeth Bloomer was recently selected by her peers to represent the "Kids Campaign to End Child Labor" as a speaker at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as a speaker at a Congressional Roundtable on Youth Activism in Washington, DC.
